Some People Change What Becomes Possible

You know you don’t want to go.

A friend asks if you’re free Saturday night, and you tell them you already have plans. They say no problem. Maybe another time.

A few days later, someone else asks you the same thing. You don’t want to go with them either.

“I’m not sure,” you say.

They ask what you’re doing.

“Nothing really.”

“Then come. You never come anymore.”

You start explaining that you’ve had a long week. They tell you everyone has had a long week. You say you might be tired. They tell you that you can leave early. Every reason you give them becomes something to answer.

Eventually you say, “Okay. Maybe.”

Afterward, you wonder why you didn’t just say no. You knew what you wanted before the conversation started.

The first friend made the same request, but your answer didn’t require anything from you. You could say no and the conversation moved on.

With the second person, saying no meant something else was coming. By the time you said “maybe,” the invitation was no longer the only thing you were responding to.

Sometimes it’s easy to look at moments like this and ask why you can’t just be clearer. But clarity may not be the only thing that changed.

Sometimes another person is part of the conditions.
