There’s someone you regularly have trouble talking to. The conversations tend to go the same way. You start out knowing what you want to say, but somewhere along the way you lose your footing. You explain too much, agree to things you didn’t mean to agree to, or leave feeling as though you never said what you intended.

Then one day, the conversation goes differently.

You say what you need to say. They disagree. You don’t immediately start explaining yourself. The conversation ends without being resolved, but you leave feeling surprisingly okay about it.

Later, you wonder what happened. Maybe you were just having a good day.

Or maybe something was different.

This time, they called you instead of approaching you unexpectedly. You had a few minutes before answering, and you already knew what the conversation was likely to be about. You were at home rather than standing somewhere with other people around.

None of those differences seemed important at the time. But instead of asking why you can’t handle the conversation that way every time, you could get curious about the time you did.

What was different that time?

You may not know which difference mattered. You don’t have to.

The next time you need to talk to them, you could try recreating one of them. Ask what they want to discuss before you talk. Give yourself a few minutes first. Have the conversation somewhere you can leave when it’s finished.

Then see what happens.

A moment that goes better than expected isn’t only a good outcome. It may also be information.
