Someone brings you something.
Nothing big. They were at a bakery, saw something they thought you’d like, and picked it up for you.
“Oh.”
You look at the bag.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“I know.”
You thank them. You mean it.
But almost immediately, another thought appears.
I should get them something.
You think about what they like. Maybe you could bring something next time. Maybe there’s something you could do for them.
They’ve already moved on. They’re talking about something else.
The bag is still sitting in front of you.
You haven’t even opened it yet.
