You send someone a message. An hour passes without a reply.

You check your phone again. Nothing.

You start wondering whether something is wrong. The last time you were together, they seemed quieter than usual. Maybe you said something. Maybe they’re upset.

You send another message. “Everything okay?”

They reply a little later. “Yeah. Busy.”

The answer doesn’t reassure you. It feels short.

When you see them that evening, you watch them more closely. You ask whether they’re sure everything is okay. They say yes. You ask again.

Eventually they become irritated. “I told you I’m fine.”

Now something really has changed between you. They are irritated. You can hear it in their voice. Maybe they pull back for the rest of the evening.

You notice immediately. The distance you were afraid of is now actually there.

But it didn’t simply appear.

You were already expecting something to be wrong. That expectation changed what you noticed and how you behaved. Your behavior affected the other person. Their response then gave you something real to react to.

Do this once and it may just be a difficult evening. Do it repeatedly and the relationship begins to take on a shape.

You worry about distance and move closer. They feel crowded and pull away. Their withdrawal makes you more anxious, so you move closer still. Eventually you know them as someone who pulls away, and they know you as someone who won’t give them room.

Something similar can happen around responsibility. You don’t trust that things will get done, so you take care of them yourself. The other person gets used to you handling things and takes less initiative. Their lack of initiative confirms that you really do have to handle everything.

Neither person had to choose this arrangement. Each responded to the other, repeatedly, until the responses began reinforcing one another.

A pattern that started inside one person has now changed what happens between two people. What happens between them then gives the original pattern more reason to continue.

The relationship has become part of the pattern.
