The first time the position opened, I thought about applying. It would have been a big step up. More responsibility. Better money.

I mentioned it to someone I worked with.

“You should go for it.”

“I don’t know. I’m probably not ready.”

So I didn’t apply.

A couple of years later, another position opened. I downloaded the application and started filling it out. I kept meaning to finish it.

Eventually they hired someone else.

After that, I stopped paying much attention when positions came up.

I knew the job. I was good at it. People came to me when they needed help.

Over the years, I trained several new employees. Some of them became supervisors.

One eventually became my supervisor.

Last month, she asked me why I’d never moved up.

I told her I never really wanted to be management.

I’m not sure that’s true.
