I Put Things Off Until They Become Emergencies

I put things off until they become emergencies.

It’s not like I forget about them. Half the time, I’m thinking about them for days.

I know I need to make the appointment. Pay the bill. Answer the email. Finish whatever I said I was going to finish. I just don’t do it.

I tell myself I’ll take care of it tomorrow. Then tomorrow comes and somehow I still don’t.

Eventually there’s no more time. The bill is due. Someone is waiting for an answer. The deadline is tomorrow. Now I have to deal with it.

And suddenly I can.

I make the call. Send the email. Stay up late and finish the thing I’ve been avoiding for two weeks. Usually I get it done.

That almost makes it worse.

If I could do it in three hours, why couldn’t I do it three weeks ago?
