My daughter is getting divorced.

Apparently everyone knew except me. My sister knew. My son knew. Even my ex-wife knew, and she barely talks to anybody.

I found out when I called my daughter and asked how things were going.

There was a pause.

“Mom didn’t tell you?”

“Tell me what?”

She explained.

I asked her why she hadn’t called me.

“I was going to.”

“When?”

“I don’t know, Dad.”

“You’ve been dealing with this for three months and you didn’t think I should know?”

Another pause.

“I just didn’t want to deal with your reaction.”

I didn’t know what that meant.

“What reaction?”

“You always have an opinion about everything.”

“I’m your father. I’m supposed to have an opinion.”

“I know.”

We talked for another minute and then she said she had to go.

Later, I called my son.

“You knew about this?”

“Yeah.”

“And you didn’t tell me either?”

He was quiet.

Apparently nobody tells me anything.
